& Ingmire - Ward County was one of six counties in far west Texas formed in 1887
from parent county of Old Tom Green. As the oil fields in Texas opened, and workers
appeared, the women would follow their men to the fields, new names began to
appear. The great impetus to the marriage rate and to the introduction of new names
in the records was caused in 1942 by the fact that PYOTE on the far western border of
the county was chosen as the location for a bomber base. Approx. 2300 marriages wih
a full name index.
